The book series is called “Descendants of Harry Potter”

That title is not wrong because of the great similarities between Nevermoor and Harry Potter. The two series are based on the plot pattern “the chosen child – the chosen child”: The child is being treated very badly in his own house, suddenly one day “rescued” to a magical world that I didn’t know it before, and immediately became a special character, the hero here, must learn to both integrate and develop to take on the role of protecting and rescuing the new world from the evil forces. Darkness has a close relationship with itself, once covering and making everyone afraid.

I used to really like Harry Potter (although not Potterhead), but to be more fair to Nevermoor, T will evaluate the series as an independent work, not comparing it to the legendary Harry Potter.

Some interesting T-points about Nevermoor are that the story has built an interesting, colorful and unique magical world. The plot of a teenage girl’s fight against evil is quite attractive, although there are many parts that are a bit lengthy.

But overall, this is not a series that T is interested in, for the following reasons:

Nevermoor’s world is confusing and lacks systematic explanation.

The world in Nevermoor is newly built, not intertwined with the world we live in, so there should be a more thorough explanation for the reader to grasp how this world works.

Having immediate family, brothers and sisters, lifelong loyalty when joining WunSoc is very forced.

This can be explained to classmates of the same year. But between generations of WunSoc, between different school years, there is no bond to be loyal and to exchange lives to protect each other.

Some important characters are not invested and exploited.

For example, his best friend Hawthorne. Aside from being good at riding dragons, being mischievous and making jokes, and being very loyal to Morrigan, Hawthorne has no other outstanding personality traits, while the character is all-important, Morrigan’s best friend. T feels that the Fenestra cat has more depth than Hawthorne.

Don’t like the main character.

Morrigan Crow is too passive in both the first 2 volumes of the series. During episode 1, she just immediately copes with the challenges set, and… waits for Jupiter in the most difficult challenge. Of course, as a child, T does not require her to think of any superior solution, but at least she should be curious and try to find a solution. For example, think of a temporary idea or practice a certain talent as a backup, in case Jupiter can’t appear, at least it can fight the fire. Even Jupiter himself remarked that Morrigan was too obedient.

Or in episode 2, she repeated over and over again that she had to find out who was behind the anonymous letters that blackmailed the group, didn’t take any significant action, and didn’t see her making much effort to appease her friends after that. when you all sacrificed (which everyone thought at the time) for Morrigan.

In addition, not providing the main character with the means to learn about the new world or himself is also something T does not like. Maybe a library? An ancient book accidentally picked up while exploring the hotel? Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s still better to find out and discover for yourself than to wait and worry about your own life. Most of the information Morrigan has is from Jupiter, and even the villain is so impatient that “come on, I will teach you quickly”.

In the series T likes only three characters: Jupiter, Jack and Cadence. These three characters are interesting, unique and very promising to continue to exploit for the next episodes.

However, unfortunately, T decided to stop the game here after reading volume 2. But T still feels this is a well-rounded, colorful, imaginative series for children, especially children. teenage girls.

T read the English version, so I can’t comment on Dinh Ti’s translation. The cover of the Vietnamese version is very beautiful and T really liked it, more than the cover of the two English versions.
